What is Specialist Teaching?

  • Initially, a consultation will take place, often on the phone, to find out the weaker areas and strengths of the the learner.

  • After using a variety of analysed assessments, appropriately chosen, a specialist teacher identifies what specific intervention is required for that individual to cover gaps in their learning and formulate specific targets for the indiviual’s personal learning needs.

  • These individualistic, measurable, specific, targets are delivered in small, achievable, cumulative steps using a multi-sensory teaching framework, including kinaesthetic learning, that also provides the opportunity for plenty of reinforcement activities.

  • Reinforcement activities are deliberately enjoyable and memorable, including the use of games to reinforce learning.

  • Specialist teaching provides the opportunity for frequent, specific praise in the success of these achievable targets, leading to a learner’s increased self-esteem and self-confidence.

  • A specialist teacher identifies a learner’s strengths and develops these throughout their intervention, ensuring that the learner achieves success.

  • The specialist teacher acts as a facilitator and a communicator, building a partnership with the learner.
